Plus Size Bras: A Plain-English Guide

Last updated: September 2026

Finding a comfortable bra in a larger size shouldn't be hard — but too often the options are either heavily structured, wired and restrictive, or flimsy and unsupportive. This guide answers the questions we hear most: what counts as plus size, how much support you can realistically expect, and what to look for in a bra that fits well and feels good all day.

What counts as a plus size bra?

There's no single definition. In clothing, "plus size" usually starts around UK 16–18. In bras it's muddier, because bra sizing mixes band size and cup size — a 38C and a 40E might both consider themselves plus size, and both are right.

For our comfort bra we use simple S–6XL sizing based on your measurements rather than traditional cup sizing. The 6XL fits a bust of roughly 120–130 cm and covers around a UK 46E–F. If you measure yourself and match your centimetres to the chart, the size you land on is the one that fits — whatever the label says.

Do bigger busts need underwire?

Underwire is one way to shape and lift, but it isn't the only one. Support in any bra comes mostly from the band around your body — a firm, wide underband does far more work than a wire ever does. A well-made wire-free bra with a broad band, wide straps and stretch construction can comfortably support everyday wear, including fuller busts.

What a wire-free bra gives up is structured shaping: less projection and lift than a rigid wired style. What it gives back is comfort — no wire digging in under the bust, no poking through the fabric, no red marks when you take it off. For sleep, lounging, work and daily wear, many women with larger busts prefer exactly that.

What to look for in a plus size comfort bra

  • A wide, snug underband — this is where your support comes from. It should sit level all the way round and feel snug, not tight.
  • Broad straps — narrow straps concentrate weight on the shoulders and dig in. Wide straps spread it out.
  • Seamless, soft fabric — fewer seams means fewer places to rub, and nothing shows under your clothes.
  • Breathability — ventilation panels or lightweight stretch fabric make a real difference in warmer weather and for all-day wear.
  • Simple sizing — measure your bust and underbust in centimetres and use the size chart rather than guessing a cup size.

Getting the fit right

Use a soft tape measure in centimetres. Measure around the fullest part of your bust, then directly beneath it. Match both numbers to our size chart — if either measurement falls between sizes, choose the larger size for comfort.

Two quick checks once it's on: the band should sit level and firm without digging, and the straps should feel supportive without pressing grooves into your shoulders. If the band rides up or the straps slide, the size is wrong — a bigger size or a different fit will feel better than tightening the straps.

Our size guide includes UK, EU, Spain, France and Italy conversions from S to 6XL.

Comfort for bigger busts, day and night

Larger busts often mean a bra that's on for longer — because taking it off is a relief, but going without isn't always an option. A lightweight, wire-free style changes that: it's comfortable enough to wear through the evening, to sleep in if you want to, and to forget you're wearing at all.

That's the brief we designed to. Our seamless comfort bra is unpadded, wire-free and pull-on, with a wide smoothing band, broad straps and breathable perforated panels. It comes in sizes S–6XL and eight colours.
